When La Calisto premiered in Venice in 1651, six musicians accompanied the singers. Daucé, who has spent the better part of a decade burrowing into seventeenth-century French sacred music, brings thirty-five. The result isn't bloat—it's the orchestral equivalent of cleaning centuries of varnish off a painting. Lauranne Oliva's Calisto floats with an almost conversational ease; Alex Rosen's Jupiter toggles between comic bluster and genuine gravity. Seven years is a long time for Tim Presley to sit still, but Orange sounds like someone who used that silence well. Ty Segall plays drums and produces, and his chief contribution seems to be subtraction—gone is the gauze of lo-fi murk that used to swaddle these songs. What emerges is eleven tracks of unnervingly direct pop: melodies you can trace on first listen, vocals that actually enunciate. "Your Eyes" develops like a Polaroid; "Given Up My Heart" is the most tender thing Presley has committed to tape. The garage is still there, but someone finally opened the door. The Sunflower Bean frontwoman's solo debut pivots so cleanly toward Carole King-era warmth that it almost reads as contrarian in 2026. Produced by Chris Coady—whose fingerprints are on Beach House and Yeah Yeah Yeahs records—Julia gives Cumming's voice room it never had in the band context. The best moments are the fractures: "I Dream of a Fire that Stays Burning…" smuggles dissonance into an otherwise velvet arrangement, and "Do It All Again" erupts into a guitar solo that reminds you she spent years in a rock band. Montreal's Atsuko Chiba have spent three albums building a reputation for dense, driving post-rock. Their self-titled fourth does the opposite: six tracks, thirty-two minutes, and a deliberate retreat from volume. Trip-hop pulses and chamber-pop strings slip into the spaces where walls of guitar used to be. "Retention" opens with a patience the old band wouldn't have tolerated; "Torn" pushes distortion to the horizon line and lets everything else breathe. Named after a fictional anti-anxiety medication, this D.C. duo's debut album is a document of losing yourself—to depression, to capitalism, to the seductive weight of memory. The sonic palette refuses to sit still: noise-punk textures slam against vocals that recall Nina Simone's poise, while production choices nod to Radiohead's architecture and Gorillaz's playfulness. The result splits the difference between a beat tape and a jazz improvisation session—twenty-six minutes, no fat, every transition earned. Datsunn and Johnny Marsiglia guest without overstaying. Alex Edkins walked away from METZ's noise-rock barrage to make power pop, and his second Weird Nightmare album commits fully to that choice. Jim Eno of Spoon co-produces; Seth Manchester's Machines with Magnets studio gives the hooks a physical weight that most power-pop records lack. Edkins's voice still carries grit from his previous life—every sugar-coated melody has a sandpaper undertone.
