Each is a miniature drama contained in the most refined of vessels. Pierre Dumoussaud conducts the Brussels Philharmonic with the chamber-music sensitivity these delicate pieces demand. This is musicological archaeology that happens to be beautiful.

By her fourth album, Hawke has earned the right to be discussed on her own terms. Written and produced with Christian Lee Hutson and Benjamin Lazar Davis, Maitreya Corso is built around a fictional character of the same name—a "magical misfit" whose inability to adapt to the surrounding world forces her to construct one of her own. It is, in other words, a concept album about the ego, though Hawke wears the conceit lightly enough that you might not notice unless you read the press notes. Thirteen songs navigate between folk intimacy and art-pop ambition without settling comfortably in either camp, which may be the point.

Candace Lee Camacho, who records as duendita, built this album alone in Berlin, running beats on a Digitakt late at night until the twelve songs existed as demos. Harpist Samantha Feliciano, drummers Julian Berann and Anton Remy, and co-producer Noah Becker arrived later, fleshing out structures that already had their emotional architecture in place. The result sits at the intersection of lo-fi soul, gospel-inflected vocal layering, and experimental electronic production—a combination that sounds cluttered on paper and cohesive on playback. NPR and Stereogum both flagged it; Camacho herself called the songs "so personal, like a diary," which is the sort of description that is either a cliché or the truth, and here it appears to be the latter.

The most notable thing about Time may be its timeline. The title track is a previously unheard Bill Withers composition, which alone would justify the archaeological effort. The connection between these two bassists runs deeper than music: Lamar Williams Sr. played in the Allman Brothers Band before Oteil Burbridge took the chair. Their collaboration began over a decade ago in Burbridge's basement in Georgia, where he was teaching himself banjo, and it was finally committed to tape in December 2024 at Flóki Studios on Iceland's north coast. Soulive co-founder Alan Evans produced eight songs that weave Southern soul, gospel, improvisational rock, and West African percussion into something that resists genre classification while honouring all of its sources. The ensemble—including Jerry Garcia Band organist Melvin Seals and percussionist Weedie Braimah—plays with the loose precision of musicians who have been listening to each other for years.
