The Berlin-via-Cape-Town songwriter Dumama released her first full-length solo album last Friday, and Bandcamp gave it Album of the Day on Monday — the kind of after-the-fact endorsement that suggests editors needed a minute to absorb it. The record's geography is a long sentence: written in Port Alfred and Cape Town, first recorded in New York in 2019, then put through a six-year process of being "crystallized" in Berlin and finally reimagined in Johannesburg by Nandi Ndlovu. That itinerary is also the method. Gospel passages give way to a kind of left-field electronics that doesn't read as electronic music so much as a long exhalation. The album's intellectual scaffolding — Black ontologies of circular time — could easily curdle into a press-release sentiment, but Dumama writes inside the idea rather than around it. The opener whispers in your ear. Two pianists who haven't recorded a duo since 2007 (the year of Under the Water) finally went back into a room together — or, more accurately, onto a stage at the 2024 Leibnitz Jazz Festival. The new record is their second-ever duo album and the first thing you notice is what isn't on it: the liner notes refuse to identify who plays which piano on which track. Fujii and Melford asked their label to leave that out. They swap pianos throughout, and the point of the exercise is that the listener cannot say, even reflexively, "this is the Japanese hand, this is the American one." Melford wrote four pieces; Fujii wrote three. Once they start, the authorship dissolves anyway. The title is a Japanese word for the kind of private conversation only intimate friends have. Chris Potter is a saxophonist whose technique has occasionally outrun his interest in form, but Alive With Ghosts Today is the most disciplined writing project he's released in over a decade. The premise is hard to summarize without sounding inflated: eight pieces tracing John Brown's 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, scored for a chamber ensemble built around Potter's tenor and soprano with Bill Frisell on guitar, Sara Caswell on violin, Rane Moore on clarinet, and Zekkereya El-Magharbel on trombone. The instrumentation isn't a quartet stretched into an octet — it's a different kind of grammar altogether, closer to chamber music than to any post-bop lineage, and the writing reflects that. Copland's open-air harmony shows up alongside a gospel bent and rhythmic phrases that come from West Africa rather than the bebop tradition. Edition Records has pressed it as a 250-copy double-vinyl gatefold with two bonus tracks; the regular LP has eight. Frisell, as ever, plays as if listening to the room before he picks up the guitar. A solo piano debut from a Brooklyn-based pianist who, until recently, was mostly known to other improvisers. Rogers grew up in rural Maine "without the distraction of even a television" (her phrasing), and the record carries the kind of inwardness that biography would predict. The fourteen pieces were extrapolated from short improvisations she had posted to social media and never intended to develop. Kris Davis, who runs Pyroclastic Records, talked her into it. The range is wide: minimalist openers, complex polymetric stretches, passages that flirt with avant-ragtime, sudden pivots into structures borrowed from twentieth-century classical writing. None of it announces itself. The Texas death-metal band's third album would have been a competent step forward on its own — Josh Schroeder produced, the hooks are sharper, the gloom is thicker. What pushes it into more interesting territory is the guest list. Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance turns up on the title track in what is plausibly the most sinister vocal performance of his career; Robb Flynn from Machine Head is on "Invoke War"; Devin Swank from Sanguisugabogg makes a cameo. None of this reads as a stunt, because the record itself doesn't depend on the names. Blabbermouth gave it a 9/10 and called it "mercilessly heavy, ruthlessly precise and bulging with hooks." The Hong Kong-born, London-based producer Kiana Li — long admired in the drum-and-bass underground for refusing to be confined to it — has launched her own label, Field Research, and the first release is a three-track EP from her gyrofield project. The mission statement reads as a small manifesto: a label as "a safe space for artists to present interesting, odd, or deeply personal ideas." The EP itself is tense, industrial-leaning club music with the bass tradition still detectable in the rhythmic chassis. Three tracks: "World In A Cat's Claw," "Digestion," and "Goat With The Red Tooth." Best heard, I think, on a Monday evening with the lights down. 香港出生、現駐倫敦的實驗電子製作人 Kiana Li（gyrofield），創立了自己的廠牌 Field Research，首發 FR001 就是這張三軌 EP："World In A Cat's Claw"、"Digestion"、"Goat With The Red Tooth"。
