Blue Note's Tone Poet series has spent the past few years rescuing Capitol-era and Atlantic-era jazz from the indignity of digital flattening, and for the centennial it has come for the founding myth. What you get on the new pressing is not the familiar 1957 compilation but the 1949–50 nonet sessions in their original sequencing, Kevin Gray mastering directly from the analog phono reels. The personnel reads like a syllabus — Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, J.J. Johnson, John Lewis, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke — and the gambit, French horn and tuba enlarging bebop's tonal envelope, sounds less radical now than it did then but only because everyone has since copied it. The Stravinsky industry tends to circle the same three or four scores; this Naxos disc takes the back roads. The opening Le chant du rossignol is the poème symphonique Stravinsky carved from his first opera, itself drawn from Hans Christian Andersen's 1843 tale. Then the early Pushkin setting The Faun and the Shepherdess, the Divertimento filleted from the 1928 ballet Le baiser de la fée, and the inevitable Pulcinella Suite. Falletta and Buffalo handle the music with what Gramophone, in next month's issue, calls "unfailingly musical" attention; Platts's mezzo gives the Pushkin its proper Russian melancholy without overpaying for it. Beisembayev arrived in the public imagination via the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition first prize and an unscheduled Proms substitution for Benjamin Grosvenor in Rachmaninoff's Second, which he played, in The Guardian's phrase, with conspicuous polish and maturity. Alpha's Next Generation Mozart Soloists series now puts him in front of the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester under Howard Griffiths with a Bösendorfer VC 280 and his own cadenzas. The 25 (K. 503) is the most architectural of the late Mozart concertos and the 26 the most ceremonial; together they ask of a young pianist what young pianists usually try to avoid — to disappear behind the music rather than into it. Camilo Lara from Mexico City and Eblis Álvarez from Bogotá have been circling each other's projects for years; they finally have a record together. The frame of reference is Rigo Tovar, the late-1970s patron saint of Mexican psychedelic cumbia, and the menu is danzón, son, cha-cha-cha, and electronics in whatever combination the song wants. Beck appears on two — "Ritmo Babilonia" and "Cumbia Beckiana" — and the surprise is that he sounds like a guest rather than a hijacker. The whole thing is dirtier and more headlong than either artist's solo work, the way the best collaborations get to be. The Seoul collective's second proper album is built around a conceit borrowed from a Borges story you have not yet read: a fictional research institute, Gongbu Korea, devoted to recording human dreams. Fourteen tracks zigzag between jazz, hip-hop, post-punk, and soul-funk, all layered over East Asian timbres and tilted, faintly, toward the hallucinatory. BTS's RM has been pushing them for years, which has helped them get heard but tends to obscure how strange they actually are — closer to a Korean cousin of Brainfeeder than to anything happening in mainstream K-pop.
