Ben Gibbard has been writing about departure for thirty years, and now names an album for an act of confinement — a tower built, ostensibly, for someone you love. Free of Atlantic and settled at Anti-, the band sounds looser than it has in a while, no longer bending each song toward a radio it stopped courting. The title cuts both ways, as the best of Gibbard's lines do: the person who builds the tower tends to be the one locked inside it. Middle-aged love songs are a difficult register, easy to oversweeten; this one mostly resists, holding to the restraint that has always been the band's quiet virtue. Not a reinvention, but a comfortable, clear-eyed continuation. For their seventh album the duo decamped last January to Hydra, the Greek island that empties out in winter until you can hear the hills. You can almost hear them on the record. Molly Hamilton has always sung as though through a fogged window, and here the haze becomes the subject rather than the effect — ten songs about the stages of intimacy, paced like a curtain barely moving in afternoon heat. It is slow music that knows exactly how slow it wants to be, which is a harder thing to pull off than it sounds. The Malian singer and guitarist places her Wassoulou inheritance in the hands of the French producer -M-, and the meeting is gentler than that pairing might suggest. Massa — the Bambara word carries the weight of "leader," of the highest thing — turns out to be about roots rather than power: how a person, once pulled up by the stem, still recognizes the soil of home. Diawara wrote it after her father's death, and the grief sits openly in the songs without ever tipping into spectacle. It is her most private record, private enough that it scarcely feels like performance, and the production has the sense to stay out of its way. 馬利的 Wassoulou 傳統遇上法國製作人 -M- 的流行手感，比想像中溫柔。Diawara 自己彈吉他、寫歌，唱母性、信仰與記憶，專輯獻給她過世的父親。「Massa」在 Bambara 語裡有「領袖」「至高」的意思，但她唱的不是權力，是根——人在被連根拔起之後，怎麼還認得回家的那片土。這是她至今最私密的一張，私密到幾乎不像在表演，製作也識相，懂得讓路。

Blood Incantation made their name on technical death metal dense enough to need a diagram, so the premise here is its own small joke: the soundtrack to a film about the band, and it contains no metal at all. Four tracks — Balance, Flight, Dawn, Rain — recorded back in 2021, shelved, and only now let out. The lineage is Berlin School, the Tangerine Dream patience of synthesizers left to bloom and decay on their own clock. What keeps it from being a side-project curio is the seriousness of it; these are people who usually sing about the void, handling stillness with unexpected tenderness. Paul Riedl calls it not a sequel but "another room" in the same house. Jalen Ngonda — Doctrine of Love

Daptone's surest new voice returns, and promptly travels backward in time. Where his debut lived in the seventies of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, the second record reaches a decade further, toward New Orleans rhythm-and-blues and the soul of Chicago and Detroit — brighter horns, gospel harmonies banked underneath. This is the label's house trick, and it never stops being impressive: not a reproduction of warmth but the thing itself, coaxed back into growing. Ngonda, raised in Washington and now in London, sings as if he stepped out of 1958 and is mildly puzzled to find the rest of us here. The conceit could curdle into pastiche; his voice, unhurried and entirely sincere, keeps it honest. Daptone 這幾年最穩的一張新面孔。首張靠 Marvin Gaye、Curtis Mayfield 的七〇年代質地站穩，第二張乾脆再往回走十年——五〇年代紐奧良 R&B，芝加哥與底特律的靈魂樂。銅管更亮，福音味的和聲鋪在底下。這是 Daptone 的看家本領：不是複刻，是讓那種暖度重新長出來。倫敦長大的他，唱得比誰都像 1958 年，還對我們都在場這件事感到有點意外。

Five British voices, unaccompanied, under a name borrowed from the birdcatcher's wife in The Magic Flute. The program is the draw: a single line pulled across eight centuries, from the medieval plainchant of Hildegard of Bingen through Monteverdi and Purcell, out to traditional Ukrainian, Indian, and Bulgarian songs, and finally to contemporary writing by James MacMillan and Caroline Shaw. The stated themes — love, beauty, the passing of time — sound grand, but the singing is the opposite of grand: close, plain, the overtones of five women polishing one another. Six of the pieces are premiere recordings. Azniv Korkejian's fourth album, and her first in five years, arrived only after a trip back to family in Saudi Arabia — the first record, she says, that she wrote with an intention rather than a drift. Born in Syria, raised in the Gulf, long resident in Los Angeles, she writes folk with a clean architecture and a homesickness threaded through the harmony that never quite resolves into a place. The songs are slow without being inert, plain without being thin, and they leave a faint sweetness behind, the way a city you once lived in looks through a heat haze. A quiet, deliberate return. Azniv Korkejian 的第四張，距上一張《Waysides》五年。敘利亞出生、沙烏地長大、最後落腳洛杉磯的她，這次回沙烏地探親後才動筆——她說這是第一張「帶著目的」寫的專輯。民謠的骨架，但和聲裡總有一層化不開的鄉愁，始終不肯落地成某個具體的地方。慢，但不悶；淡，但有回甘。一次安靜、節制的回歸。

The day's dispatch from Tokyo: a debut full-length from a young trio formed in 2024, working the synthesizer warmth of City Pop without sliding into costume nostalgia. There is none of the deliberate tape-hiss antiquing that the revival usually leans on. Instead they take the residual glow of the Tatsuro Yamashita generation and re-record it in a clean, present-tense fidelity, light on its feet. "Still Romance" is a faintly naïve title to plant a flag under, and they sing it without irony, which is exactly the point. A small, bright thing, arriving a day ahead of the Friday rush. 二〇二四年出道的日本三人組，首張全長。名字直白，音樂也直白——City Pop 的合成器底子，配上當代 J-indie 的輕盈。不刻意做舊，更像把山下達郎那一代人的餘溫接過來，用現在乾淨的錄音重講一遍。「Still Romance」，仍然浪漫，是個有點天真的標題，但他們唱得理直氣壯。明天 NMF 之外，今天東京遞過來的一張小清新。
