For twenty years after his death Julius Eastman was a rumor: scores lost, recordings scattered, a major American voice filed under "missing." Wild Up has spent the better part of a decade hauling him back into the light, one volume at a time, and this is the fifth. Gay Guerrilla was written for four pianos; here the ensemble opens it out across strings, horns, reeds and keys, and the force of it doesn't soften so much as acquire volume — frenzied repetition, Lutheran hymn fragments queered from the inside, then sudden flares of melody. Eastman, before the 1980 premiere: "without blood, there is no cause." It took forty-six years for an orchestra to take him at his word. Today's one essential listen, with no close second. Rasmussen is the half of Kiasmos that isn't Ólafur Arnalds, and for ten years he has worked mostly out of frame — producing, mixing, writing for other people. Inert is the first time he steps to the front of his own record, and the surprise is his voice, used here more than ever, threaded through electronics built with a watchmaker's patience. The theme, fittingly, is the effort of breaking free from stasis, and you can hear it in the music's forward lean: cool but not cold, restrained but plainly impatient to move. The Faroese precision is intact; what's new is the nerve to let a human grain blur the machine. The Danish pianist is eighty, and Subcurrents is less an album than a core sample: seven performances spanning 1968 to 2025, including two solo improvisations he sat down and recorded just last year. Fifty-seven years inside one sleeve is a risky proposition — it could read as a scrapbook — but what holds it together is the hand. You can hear the same hesitation pressed differently across a lifetime: the push of the young player, the economy of the old one, the through-line of a temperament that never stopped second-guessing itself in the most productive way. It proves nothing and insists on nothing; it simply lays the hidden currents on the table and lets you watch them move. Gilbert and Sullivan has been performed by the modern pit for a century and more — rounded, upholstered, professional. This is the first time anyone has put it back on period instruments, and the effect is startling: gut strings thin the sound, straighten it, and suddenly the words carry with a directness the plush modern arrangement had quietly buried. This is the color a Victorian drawing room, concert hall and bandstand actually knew. The tenor David Webb's debut solo album pairs the familiar Savoy faces with genuine excavation — excerpts from the late comic opera The Rose of Persia and three oratorios most listeners will never have heard. It isn't nostalgia. Recorded at Versailles last May, the Swiss soprano's program gathers four of Handel's secular cantatas — Il delirio amoroso, Un'alma innamorata, Crudel tiranno Amor — and closes with Sans y penser, the only thing Handel ever wrote in French. The cantata was his private laboratory, stripped of the opera's pomp: one voice and a handful of players in close, unsparing combat. Lys wins not by volume but in the turns, where the fireworks actually live — a flick of ornament, a held line bent just past where you expect it to break. Later this year she sings the title role in Handel's Theodora under Rousset; treat this as the warm-up, though it gives away nothing.
