Six records that all seem to be writing home from somewhere else
Chanel Beads — Your Day Will Come
Shane Lavers gave his second album the same title as his 2024 debut, which began as a joke about the way music gets parceled into tidy chapters and ended as something closer to a koan. Will your day come? What will it feel like? The record was made in a small Brooklyn room with the speakers close enough to his face that he could feel the air leave the kick drum. There are no demos — the rule is to start recording before the song exists and let the song grow into the take. The result keeps its seams showing: androgynous vocals, synthetic and acoustic textures smeared together, intimacy that feels one breath from collapse. Nihilism and love, he says, ought to cancel each other out, and don't. Today's most fragile thing, and the one to hear first.
(Michita Murasaki)
Jonathan Kuo — Java Dreams: Godowsky & Stravinsky
Leopold Godowsky wrote his Java Suite in the mid-1920s and called it a cycle of "musical travelogues" — a Polish-Jewish virtuoso transposing the metallic shimmer of the gamelan into the sustain pedal of a concert grand. Jonathan Kuo, who was born in Indonesia, plays it like a map of his own childhood, then walks straight from the morning haze of Borobudur into the carnival crush of Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka. Two islands, two civilizations, one program. Reviewing it for Gramophone, Jed Distler put Kuo "at the head of the class" in "The Great Day" — and the secret isn't display but a kind of held-back exuberance, the brilliance kept on a leash. The most quietly remarkable classical release of the day.
Edward Gardner / London Philharmonic Orchestra — Strauss: An Alpine Symphony & Metamorphosen
One disc, two opposite weathers. First the Alpine Symphony, in which a full orchestra hauls you from darkness to sunrise to summit to storm, Strauss compressing an entire mountain into the span of a single day. Then Metamorphosen, twenty-three solo strings keening over a bombed-out city. Both were captured live at the Royal Festival Hall, where BachTrack noted that Gardner "kept a steely control, within which the players could really let rip. And let rip they did." The sequencing is the cruel and brilliant part: be flattened by a mountain, then undone by the quiet of twenty-three people. Few records this week understand so well that scale is nothing without its opposite close behind.
Jader Bignamini / Detroit Symphony Orchestra — Orff: Carmina Burana
Everyone knows the opening hammer-blow of Carmina Burana; the trick is the forty minutes afterward, where most performances sag. Bignamini and Detroit gambled on a live recording (Orchestra Hall, last November), accepting every hazard of the room in exchange for the one thing a studio can't fake — the headlong rush of a real audience present. The cast is well chosen: soprano Chen Reiss, countertenor Reginald Mobley, baritone Andrzej Filończyk, with the vocal ensemble Audivi and the Detroit Opera Youth Chorus. Those thirteenth-century monastery verses, lewd and blasphemous by turns, come back out with what BBC Music Magazine, naming it the month's Choral Choice, called "immaculate discipline but exceptional pizzazz."
Ning Feng / Kammerakademie Potsdam — Mozart: Complete Violin Concertos
Ning Feng directs these five concertos from the violin itself, no conductor out front — fitting for music a teenage Mozart wrote to be light on its feet and reluctant to brood. He alternates two great instruments, a 1665 Amati and a 1694 Rugeri, one warm and one bright, letting the violins themselves do some of the voicing. The Telegraph praised his "gorgeous light touch with faultless intonation," and the real achievement is tonal: repertoire that curdles the moment it gets self-important, played here as easily as conversation. The most companionable record of the day, and exactly the right size for a Sunday afternoon.
