MAQUINA. are a Lisbon trio fronted by a singer who grew up in a small town in Paraná, Brazil, and onstage they are known for stretching a single motif well past the ten-minute mark. The record does the reverse. It takes that live sprawl and crushes it into three-minute slugs, the density intact but forced into a smaller box, forever about to burst the seams. The mix is saturated to the edge of clipping; the drums seem struck against your ear. "dança," the opener, brings in Dame Area, whose voice and the machine pulse knot into the least forgiving three minutes here. It is a record that mistrusts comfort and says so out loud. Jamie Stewart has rescored the whole of David Lynch's Eraserhead — a live score, a performance, a concert film — and the sound sources are exactly as unruly as you'd hope: homemade instruments, an organ, modular synths, flashlights, the hiss of electrical interference. "Tetra" and "Sleep Synth" climb from near-silent scrapings to something close to grotesque, and then the closer, a cover of Peter Ivers's "In Heaven," arrives improbably tender. You won't find this on Spotify: the band pulled their entire catalog in protest of the former CEO's investment in AI war drones, which is its own kind of statement about where a record wants to live. The Austin psych outfit decamped to Ensenada, Mexico to cut this one alongside Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, and the border air suits them. "dewey's dirge" unfolds without hurry, hazy guitars blooming over a softened motorik pulse that keeps everything drifting forward. Where earlier Holy Wave records could feel like pastiche, this one settles into its own weather — warmer, looser, content to circle a groove until it means something. It is the sound of a band on holiday from its influences, and the better for it. 奧斯汀的迷幻樂團，這張跑到墨西哥的恩塞納達錄，找了當地的 Lorelle Meets the Obsolete 一起弄。同名曲〈i'm DADA〉繞著一條橡皮筋似的貝斯線打轉，吉他切得很短，整首在一個圈裡循環，不急著去哪。〈dewey's dirge〉則慢慢化開，霧一樣的吉他底下墊著一層被軟化的 motorik 脈動。夏天傍晚開車聽剛好。

Fifteen years since their last album, and the Brooklyn noise-rockers return with their fixation on structure fully intact. Snares and roto-toms ping-pong across the stereo field, junk percussion clatters, and a melody always survives the din. The centerpiece is the three-part "Descending," which exploits the Shepard-tone illusion — chords that seem forever to be falling and never once resolve, an Escher staircase rendered in feedback. It is a formal trick that could have been a gimmick; here it becomes the emotional argument, a record about momentum that refuses to arrive. 闊別十五年的新作。軍鼓和 roto-tom 在左右聲道之間來回彈跳，廢金屬似的敲擊噼啪作響，噪音底下卻始終有旋律撐著。最狠的是三段式的〈Descending〉——它用了 Shepard tone 那個聽覺幻覺，和絃聽起來一直在往下掉，卻永遠落不到底。像盯著一段不會停的樓梯。

Ebbb are a London trio, and Shallow Hits is their debut for Ninja Tune. Their method is density: shimmering synth lines and multi-tracked harmonies stacked into what should read as cold, technoid pop and instead opens out into something sweeping. The title track begins as a small loop and grows until it nearly overflows the frame. For a first record it arrives with unusual poise — the Quietus reached for "game-changing," which is the kind of thing critics say and later regret, though on this evidence they may be safe. 倫敦三人組的第一張，簽在 Ninja Tune。三個人堆合成器和人聲的方式很密——閃爍的音色一層層疊上去，本該是陰冷的 technoid 質地，最後卻鋪成一首開闊的 indie pop。同名曲從一小塊律動開始，越長越大，到後段幾乎要漫出來。首作就有這個氣場，值得盯著他們。

The premise is the joke and the joke is good: a Toronto trio that includes members of the death-metal band Tomb Mold, playing entirely instrumental music that borrows Don Caballero's math-rock skeleton and lacquers it in smooth jazz. The chords come straight out of the Steely Dan songbook; the sweetness comes from video-game soundtracks and anime scores. It should be insufferable. It is, instead, disarming — clever without smirking, the sound of serious players letting themselves enjoy something. 多倫多三人組，成員裡有做死亡金屬的 Tomb Mold 的人。私底下他們玩的卻是另一套：Don Caballero 那種數學搖滾的骨架，抹上一層 smooth jazz 的光澤，和絃直接從 Steely Dan 的歌本裡拔出來，還摻著電玩和動畫配樂的甜。全器樂，沒有人聲，卻一點都不冷。夏天將盡那種微微發黏的傍晚，配這張。

Midway through, the jazz pianist Sri Hanuraga walks into a Balinese gamelan and the collision — Western harmony against a scale no piano could be tuned to — becomes the whole event. Dewa Alit built this gamelan to his own microtonal specifications, and elsewhere sets its tunings ringing against each other, deliberately out of true, the shimmer of beating tones there by design rather than error. Some of the denser percussion would sit comfortably on a Príncipe release from across the water in Lisbon. It is the closest thing to classical I have this week, and it earns the corner. 補記，六月中的碟，也是本週唯一撐起古典邊界的一張。巴釐島作曲家 Dewa Alit 為自己那套訂製微分音甘美蘭寫的新作，他讓三套不同的音準系統同時響，故意不對齊，金屬排琴的 pattern 在耳朵裡互相咬——那層微微發顫的失調來自設計本身。中段爵士鋼琴家 Sri Hanuraga 闖進來，西方的和聲撞上這套誰也調不準的音階，火花就在那。有幾段密集的敲擊，放進里斯本 Príncipe 廠牌也不違和。

Okkervil River's Will Sheff steps out under his own name for a patient, breathing folk record, and fills the room with friends — Peter Silberman of the Antlers, Jenn Wasner, A.C. Newman, Christian Lee Hutson — without ever letting it crowd. The writing carries both the glow of poetry and the gravity of a hymn. A record for late, when the house is quiet. Okkervil River 的主腦 Will Sheff 的個人專輯。收斂、耐心，一張活生生在呼吸的民謠。他找了一票人來幫忙：The Antlers 的 Peter Silberman、Jenn Wasner、A.C. Newman、Christian Lee Hutson，人多卻不擠。詞裡有詩的光，也有聖歌那種往下沉的重量。適合夜深了、想一個人待著的時候。
