An opera won the 1951 Pulitzer; its first recording comes from the orchestra next door.
Douglas Moore — Giants in the Earth
- Released發行

The South Dakota Symphony spent April of 2025 performing an opera set, quite literally, on the land beneath its feet: Rølvaag’s novel of Norwegian settlers homesteading the Dakota Territory in the 1870s, as scored by Douglas Moore. What makes the recording news is that nobody had ever made one. Moore won the 1951 Pulitzer for this piece—five years before The Ballad of Baby Doe, the opera everyone actually knows him for—and then Giants in the Earth spent three quarters of a century as a footnote, praised by the Pulitzer jury for its “freshness, beauty, and distinctive character” and performed by almost no one. Delta David Gier and his forces treat it as living repertoire rather than a museum errand. The settlers open Act I singing the Norwegian anthem, and the writing keeps that displaced-hymn quality throughout: plainspoken, homesick, stubborn. Beret’s wooden chest from the old country serves as an altar in one scene and a hiding place in another. Ninety-seven minutes, on Pentatone, recorded by the people whose ground the story is buried in.
Christoph Croisé & Ana Bakradze — Folklore
- Released發行
- 2026-07-10(Presto 產品頁 + iTunes 2026-07-10)
A cello makes a surprisingly good interpreter. Croisé and Bakradze run a program through Spain, Hungary, France and Georgia—Falla, Bartók, Sarasate, Fauré, a Boulanger rarity—and the instrument keeps finding the singer under each idiom. The quiet center is Tsintsadze’s Georgian folk pieces: the fourth, “Nana,” is a lullaby Bakradze’s mother sang to her as a child, and the pianist plays it that way, without italics. Twenty-eight tracks, seventy-three minutes.
- Released發行
- 2026-07-10(Bandcamp "released 10 July 2026" + iTunes 2026-07-10)
Panda Bear & Sonic Boom — A ? of WHEN
- Released發行
- 2026-07-10(Bandcamp album 頁 + Domino;jambase "out now" 7/10)
The title has a question mark where its noun should be, which turns out to be the mission statement: the second Panda Bear and Sonic Boom album is about not knowing, sung by two men who find the condition oddly cheering. The songs worry over online exhaustion and political chicanery, then dress the worry in the brightest fabrics available—Mary Lattimore’s harp loops, sequenced steel drums, Zena Kay’s pedal steel, stray bits of a Mexico City mariachi band, textures the duo chose precisely because they’d never used them. “Never givin’ in” opens the record like a beach umbrella going up in a storm. And one practical note: you will not find this on streaming services. Vinyl, CD, cassette, download. The refusal is the closest thing the record has to a thesis, and they mean it gently.
TENGGER — SKY
- Released發行
- 2026-07-10(Bandcamp "released 10 July 2026" + iTunes 2026-07-10)
The name means “endless sky” in Mongolian and “vast sea” in Hungarian, and the traveling family band’s eighth album commits to both readings: one continuous environment, six track markers, no seams you’d notice. “Blue” drifts for nine minutes on luminous synths and itta’s breath-paced voice. I’ve played it twice and still couldn’t tell you where “Celeste” ends; ask me again in a week.
Akusmi — Terra Incognita

Sarathy Korwar’s tabla is the tell on “Rain Dance”: it moves with a jittery, near-drum’n’bass momentum that no purist would sanction, which is exactly the point of Pascal Bideau’s project. The London-based Frenchman built the album around dépaysement—the untranslatable disorientation of arriving somewhere wholly unfamiliar—and stocked it with a couple dozen instruments gathered on his travels, mbira to balafon to adungu. His alto saxophone threads through it all as, in his phrase, “half-narrator, half-explorer.” The Quietus called the result a global music “indebted to almost everything but overly derivative of nothing,” and the opener tips its hat plainly to Alice Coltrane. Senegalese griot Dudú Kouate sings the album out across several octaves. 開場〈A Waking Dream〉致意 Alice Coltrane。
James Brandon Lewis Quartet — Omni
- Released發行
- 2026-06-26(Bandcamp + iTunes 2026-06-26;Intakt CD 457)
“Twelve-tone gospel” sounds like a joke until you hear the quartet play it straight. Lewis’s Molecular Systematic Music began a decade ago as a private theory of small scales; on the quartet’s sixth album it has grown a steeple, with track titles that run a full order of service, from “Call to Worship” through “The Sermon” to “Testify.” Kevin Le Gendre titles his liner essay “A sermon without words,” which gets the register right: Aruán Ortiz, Brad Jones and Chad Taylor play with the settled intensity of a congregation that has been meeting for ten years. Lewis’s tenor remains one of the most direct sounds in contemporary jazz. On Intakt, from late June; I missed it then, and repent.
Debt Rag — It Is Clear What's Going On

The Olympia trio says it wanted this one to feel like a mixtape, and seventeen tracks in forty-odd minutes is mixtape arithmetic. No guitars anywhere: keyboards, bass, drums, three voices trading off, and a trumpet that plays like it is being chased. The collage logic runs deep—“Drumbo 2” is sequenced before “Drumbo,” and “Smartest Musicians” folds in a tape-reversal trick straight out of This Heat. The Quietus filed it under “Sesame Street no wave,” which captures both the primary colors and the pedagogy. Adult punks, by their own account: against society, undecided about adulthood. Liner essayist Grace Ambrose compares listening to peering into the practice space through a keyhole, and the record does have that quality of joy not staged for an audience.
