Tricky — Different When It's Silent

The plan was another side project. Since his daughter's death in 2019, Tricky has kept his own name off nearly everything, working instead through Lonely Guest, the Theis Thaws duo, and last year's joint album with Marta; a side project, he has said, requires no press, no photographs, no tour. Then Alan McGee, who now manages him, drove out to his house in France, listened to the songs, and delivered a verdict: this is a Tricky album, the best one since Maxinquaye. The opening line of the opening track is "make me want to die," a thirty-year callback to Pre-Millennium Tension, sung this time by a man: Mitch Sanders, a young Bristolian who drinks in the pubs Tricky grew up around, and whose pained falsetto floats over the electro throb of "Because I Don't Know" while Tricky's shadow vocal mutters underneath. A Dope Lemon cover gets strings; an opera singer turns up on "Piano." The only woman on the record is Marta, saved for the final track. A first-time pairing of Baltimore's most quotable MC, usually found alongside Infinity Knives, and the Manhattan producer who spent two decades building beats for Aesop Rock, billy woods, and Armand Hammer. Ennals went in aware of the company he was keeping; his own assessment is that he reached the required line. Blockhead, for his part, treats the record as a license for sound design: opener "Aldente" starts on funk synclavier and peaks when a sultry saxophone hands the melody to a swampy harmonica solo. The tracklist does some of the comedy on its own. There is a posse cut titled "Now That's What I Call a Posse Cut vol. 87," featuring Fatboi Sharif and ShrapKnel, and the closing track is called "Wonderwall." Cover art by Infinity Knives. Nobody knows who Ferries are, and the lawyers are apparently involved in keeping it that way: no shows, no names, no photographs, a former label that describes them as existing without existing. The second album, out today on London's World of Echo and already the Quietus album of the week, makes the case that dub and krautrock are the same argument conducted on different continents. The dry, repetitive drums on "All At Once Again" come straight out of the Jaki Liebezeit playbook; "Knightville Brawl" degrades in fidelity as it plays, the way an overworked dub master tape sheds a layer with every pass. Best trick: "Don't Stop" runs its course, then "Don't Stop Again" arrives as a dub remix of the song you just heard. Three of the ten titles contain the word "Again." Last year the Barranquilla-born, Toronto-based singer made La Belleza with Owen Pallett and the sixty-piece Medellín Philharmonic. The follow-up is its deliberate opposite: a collaborative, hip-forward record stitched together with the Mexican cumbia collective Turbo Sonidero, whose title welds "Caribe" onto "Enya," the reclusive New Age titan Pimienta listens to while she writes. The record earns both halves. "Arrúllame" opens as a chamber lullaby; "Tóxica" hands the floor to a deep-voiced sonidero and heads for the dancefloor; Nelly Furtado appears on "Hoy Por Tí." Third album from the Leeds talkers, and their first recorded with everyone in the same room. Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, whose CV runs from Nine Inch Nails to St. Vincent, proposed twelve weeks in the studio; the band haggled him down to nine, five in Leeds and four in Los Angeles. James Smith reports a five-month writing stretch that produced forty or fifty songs, which explains the cull-tightened tracklist. Lead single "Redeemer." The Brooklyn drummer's first solo record, distilled from several years of sound-making conducted away from the kit. The architecture is deliberate: electronics build the interior, a crafted private weather of melody and decay, while the acoustic drums act as what the label copy calls a live commentator, breaking in from reality. Mok's stated coordinates run from Autechre and Robert Hood to Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cuban rumba, which sounds like a crowded room until you hear how much space the seven tracks leave. Her 2023 debut led a ten-piece ensemble; this is the same sensibility performed alone. Year eleven of Density 2036, Claire Chase's slow-motion commissioning project that will conclude on the hundredth anniversary of Varèse's Density 21.5. Terry Riley, who turned 91 last month, began this piece in 2022 as an open-score sketchbook full of colored drawings, meant to be playable by Chase with any number of collaborators. Samuel Clay Birmaher spent two years with Riley and the performers turning the sketches into a sixty-one-minute realization for flutes and string quartet, keeping the open-form scoring that lets the piece change shape from one performance to the next. The section titles read like a children's book left in a casino: "Angels in the Snooker Parlor," "Flying Snakes," "The Realm of the Silver Balloons." In 1983, Deirdre Cartwright taught Britain to play guitar on the BBC series Rockschool. Four decades on, and fifteen years since she last led a session, she returns at the head of an organ trio that swaps the drum kit for Gary Hammond's congas, with Pete Whittaker on organ and the Latin grooves doing the steering. Released on Blow the Fuse, the label that grew out of the club night she and bassist Alison Rayner have run since 1989. Recorded in two days this February.
