Hourloupe is Frank Menchaca, a painter and writer who also plays guitar, and Anar Badalov, who produces; Last Lost Word is their sixth record and by some distance the most novelistic. Menchaca took a fragment from Humboldt's South American journals — a people driven to the cliffs above a cataract and wiped out, their language surviving only in the mouth of a parrot that had learned it — and wrote his own short story around it, which became the album's scaffolding. The music honors the conceit without illustrating it. Pieces like "Broken Circle" open into long, unmoored drift, then snap shut into instrumental miniatures under a minute long, as if the record kept losing and recovering its own thread. The touchstones Menchaca names — Oneohtrix Point Never, Nicolas Jaar, Laurie Anderson, late Bowie — are audible but never load-bearing. What stays with you is the central image: a language down to one speaker, and that speaker a bird repeating sounds it cannot mean. Grief for a grammar. I have not stopped turning it over.

On the twenty-third of July, Arca premiered XXXXX in full inside a disused Barcelona factory, a broadcast that ran close to two hours before the record itself arrived. It is her first full-length since the KICK cycle closed in 2021, and the title — a bare row of X's — belongs to the same lineage as the mixtapes she named with rows of @'s and &'s: fast, feral, allergic to polish. Sixteen tracks move at mixtape speed, dropping each idea the moment it threatens to settle in. After the conceptual sprawl of the five KICKs, the pleasure here is meanness restored, the sound of someone deleting the connective tissue on purpose. The Quietus made it album of the week. It does not grow on you; it shoves, and it likes you slightly off balance.

Before Chinook, Mallory Hawk had spent a decade as connective tissue in other people's bands: fronting the Brooklyn post-punk group Customer, playing in Trace Mountains, touring as bassist for Dublin's M(h)aol, co-running the label Double Double Whammy. This is her first record out front, alone. She named it after the CH-47 Chinooks that thudded over her military-town childhood in Fayetteville, North Carolina; her father's line about the aircraft — the only helicopter, he said, that can collide with itself, its twin rotors close enough to clip — becomes her figure for the kind of caretaking that turns on the caretaker. Sam Acchione, of Alex G's circle, produced; Margo Schultz, late of Wednesday, painted the cover. The songs earn the metaphor, generous and self-endangering at once, folk shapes roughed up at the post-punk edges. A debut that carries itself like a tenth album, because in every way but the credit, it nearly is.

Shannon Lay describes Past the Veil as an exercise in turning toward discomfort and walking in far enough to come out the other side, which is a tidy account of a record that sounds anything but. It's her first since leaving Sub Pop for her own imprint, All the Best, and the freedom shows up as furniture: pedal steel, full strings, synth, piano, where before there was mostly a guitar and a room. Rob Shelton helped her record it. The folk bones are intact; the flesh around them is new. 離開待了多年的 Sub Pop、自建廠牌 All the Best 之後,這是 Shannon Lay 的第一張。

Reinhard Goebel, who founded Musica Antiqua Köln and spent fifty years making old music sound like breaking news, has started a series, and its title carries the whole argument: Music before Bach. Volume one reconstructs the Leipzig that the young Bach walked into when he took over the Collegium Musicum at Zimmermann's coffee house in 1729 — the composers already in the water. There are world premieres here: an overture by Johann Beer, another by Heinichen, a horn concerto by Georg Melchior Hoffmann. BBC Music Magazine gave it four stars and a Choral Choice, praising the untrodden paths. It is a genealogist's record, and a quiet corrective: even Bach had a scene.

The Great Noon is the fourth album from Banksia Trio, and it keeps the method that set the third apart: sixteen channels of analog tape feeding a digital mix, a way of coaxing warmth and detail into the same room. The players are the reason to lean in. Takashi Sugawa, on bass, studied at Berklee and carries some of the harmonic strangeness of Masabumi Kikuchi, in whose orbit he worked; Shun Ishiwaka, on drums, is close to ubiquitous in Japanese jazz for the plain reason that he listens a half-second ahead of everyone. Masaki Hayashi's piano holds the middle. The title comes from Nietzsche's Zarathustra — the great noon, when the spirit stands at its height, done with nihilism, saying yes to its own life — a heavy epigraph for music this composed. It wears the weight lightly.

Yao Shisan built his name on a 2011 song sung in the Zhijin dialect of Guizhou that folded a Song-dynasty poem by Liu Yong into a folk tune, and he has been grafting southwestern Chinese speech onto contemporary songwriting ever since. His new record for Modern Sky is called, flatly, An Invalid Life — eight songs that carry the title's fatigue without wallowing in it. The dialect does what standard Mandarin can't: it keeps the songs local, unglamorous, particular to one corner of the map.

Opus Kink spent years putting out EPs before this, their Brighton debut LP, and the wait bought them theater. The Sweet Goodbye is brass-forward punk with jazz and country worked into the joints and cabaret smeared over the top, produced by Craig Silvey with enough grit to keep it from tipping into pastiche. Angus Rogers fronts it as a ringmaster and a narrator you shouldn't trust, working a crowd that may not be there — "I'm A Pretty Showboy," "Peckham Nocturne," a song that simply hollers "Crucify!" Forty-six minutes of misrule. It could easily curdle; instead it struts. 製作是 Craig Silvey(Sam Fender、Florence + the Machine 班底),手上留了足夠的粗糙,才沒讓它滑進拼貼式的懷舊。
