Eleven songs, no wasted motion. Glaspy's fourth album was produced by Joe Henry, whose warm, unhurried studio hand is exactly the right foil for the dry, cutting Telecaster she has built a career on — the two textures rub against each other for forty minutes and never quite settle. She wrote the record after stepping away from social media, wanting, she says, to get her attention back; you can hear the recovered concentration in how little she over-explains. The lead single, "Michigan," turns a breakup into a flight to the Midwest, the chorus landing one flat, unanswerable line after another. "Sharp Knife" is exactly as clean as it sounds. The title works as a thesis: she refuses to stand in a single mood, and even the sweetest passages here keep an edge. It is her most composed record in years, and quietly her most cutting. Seventeen years in, Citizen have made their sixth album largely alone: frontman Mat Kerekes tracked most of it in his home studio in Toledo, then handed it to Tom Lord-Alge, the arena mixer behind Green Day and Weezer, who blew it up to stadium size. That collision — bedroom origins, grandstand finish — is the whole texture of the thing. The New York quintet's debut, fronted by Julia Vassallo and mixed by Sonny DiPerri, whose fingerprints are on DIIV and Nine Inch Nails live. The shoegaze wall is built thick, but the trick is how often a plain, close vocal shoulders through it at the loudest moment. Mazzoli and her librettist Royce Vavrek adapted their opera from Lars von Trier's 1996 film: a repressive Calvinist community on the Scottish coast, and Bess, who strikes a cruel bargain with God on behalf of her paralyzed husband. It premiered at Opera Philadelphia in 2016 and has waited until now — the tenth anniversary — for a first recording. Patrick Summers conducts the Houston Grand Opera forces, and Lauren Snouffer sings Bess; from the prologue, "His Name is Jan," she lays out the character's whole reckless innocence in a single line. It is one of the most persuasive American operas of its decade, and it finally has the document it deserved. Gamba has a knack for digging out Nordic repertoire that everyone else drives past, and this Chandos disc is a good haul: Sibelius's Scaramouche, a Palmgren suite that folds Cinderella into Finnish folklore, and the reason to hear it — Englund's music for The White Reindeer, walking its tightrope between pastoral and dread. It is the rare orchestral program that sounds like a story rather than a survey. 芬蘭北部的 Oulu Sinfonia，Rumon Gamba 指揮，把一批冷門的芬蘭管絃翻了出來。最勾人的是 Einar Englund 替 1952 年民俗恐怖片《白馴鹿》寫的配樂組曲——電影講一個女人變成半人半馴鹿的妖物，音樂就在民謠與驚悚之間走鋼索。另外收了西貝柳斯的《Scaramouche》，以及 Palmgren 把灰姑娘接進芬蘭傳說的一套組曲。冷門，但一點不冷清。

Three players — Ben Vida on Moog, Will Epstein on saxophone, Booker Stardrum on drums — decamped to a converted wooden barn in the Hudson Valley and cut their debut in two days, one room, nothing isolated, everything bleeding into everything else. The result sits between minimalist repetition, jazz improvisation and krautrock: the Moog lays down a breathing mesh and the saxophone slowly threads it. Released on Balmat. Ukraine-born and based in Leitrim, Beylis offers a single forty-four-minute piece, built from a shifting graphic score. It grew out of a clearfell beside her home, and its argument is that the birds, not the people, are the architects of a living landscape — the trees are theirs, planted seed by seed. Proceeds go to Save Leitrim. Headphones, one sitting. The Jakarta producer Hajar Asyura's debut takes its title from the Javanese for "audible soul," borrowing the painter S. Sudjojono's idea of the "visible soul" and turning an overloaded city's interior into sound: broken beats, breakcore, deconstructed club, fast without ever tipping into chaos.
