The isolation experiment produced the most patient record Guruguru Brain has put out this year. Eight tracks drift between hand percussion, reedy saxophone, and guitar figures that surface and dissolve without ever hardening into riffs. "You are Silence" was written from the perspective of a spirit returning during Obon, the midsummer festival when the dead come home, watching over someone still living. That premise sounds heavy on paper, and the song itself is anything but: it moves like warm air through an open window. The single "Astral Echoes" got a proper music video in June, which for this band counts as an outburst of extroversion. The Russell brothers wrote most of this on retreats in Spain and Iceland, carrying two synthesizers and one effects unit. The constraint shows in the best way: fewer elements, more air, voices from John Joseph Holt, Kindora, Rock Floyd and Ruthven threaded through eleven tracks. Among the sound sources: a train-announcement speaker, and a crash cymbal they baked in an oven first. Release night they played the Old Royal Naval College in London. The Australian songwriter's second album layers her voice in rounds, the way children's songs pass a melody around a circle, except the circle here also contains birds, insects, wind and sea. On "Seagull Theory II" the field recordings stop behaving like backdrop and start behaving like a second choir. The subject underneath is ecological grief, handled without a single sermon. One telling detail of who claims her: American copies are handled by P.W. Elverum & Sun, Mount Eerie's mail-order shop, an endorsement that functions like a genre tag. I keep going back and forth on whether the eleven songs blur together or add up to one long one; ask me after a few more listens. 澳洲創作人的第二張。她把自己的聲音一層層輪唱疊上去，底下鋪的是鳥、蟲、風、海的田野錄音，「Seagull Theory II」裡的海鷗聽起來像正式編制內的合唱團員。主題是生態哀傷，但整張沒有一句說教。發行方式也講究：美國實體盤交給 Mount Eerie 的 P.W. In certain 10th-century Celtic texts, each wind direction carries a colour. Sood, who shares Hebridean roots with Morrison, spent years pulling colour references out of Gaelic song archives, then broke the melodies into fragments and rebuilt them over drones, bass-heavy beats and abrasive guitar. Morrison practices what she calls mythopoeic singing, invoking Black and Brown figures the historical record pushed to its margins. All twelve titles are in Gaelic; the limited vinyl comes in earth brown, which is what Donn means. The oldest anti-war joke on record, from 411 BC: the women of Athens and Sparta refuse their husbands until the men stop fighting. Adamo turned Aristophanes into an opera in 2005 at Houston Grand Opera, and it has taken twenty-one years for a recording to exist. Gil Rose and BMOP, whose Corigliano set earned a Grammy nomination, treat the score's mid-century American eclecticism seriously; Anya Matanovic sings the title role with a cast that includes John Moore and Kevin Deas. Two SACDs. Two tenor saxophones, fifty-three minutes, one unbroken take, recorded at Arco Barco in Ramsgate after years of private practice sessions and exactly two public performances. The uncanny part is the arithmetic: Challenger observes in the CD booklet's 4,000-word conversation that at moments the room seems to hold no players at all, then four or five. Parker, on his fifth appearance for False Walls, describes the duo as the simplest format and for that reason the most exposed. Circular breathing, multiphonics and close listening do the rest. English has coined a term for what this record is against: Acid Nostalgia, the political use of a flattened past to dissolve imaginable futures, an idea he traces to a conversation with the filmmaker Adam Curtis about the impossibility of predicting anything anymore. That could have stayed an essay. What makes it an album is the specificity of the ruins he chose: Japan's Metabolist architecture, Hong Kong's "one line sky," the sodium-vapour streetlights Los Angeles removed, each rendered as slow masses of harmonic weight with contributions from Chris Abrahams, Mats Gustafsson and Norman Westberg. The opener is titled with a single kanji, 大, and two songs return at the end stripped to "(alone)" versions, the record eroding itself the way its subjects were eroded. Tilbury stopped giving concerts in 2018. For his ninetieth birthday, Another Timbre has issued At Home: four CDs, forty-one tracks, about five hours, drawn from recordings he made between 2018 and 2026 on the piano, clavichord and organ in his house in Deal, Kent, plus archival material reaching back to a 1970 account of Cardew's Volo Solo and a 2004 improvisation with his old AMM partner Keith Rowe. He has said this ends his recording career. Among the pieces: Feldman's "Madame Press Died at Ninety," played by a man who is ninety, a mirror the sequencing declines to underline.
