The premise sounds like a novelty act and turns out to be a family tree. The New York quartet takes Janet Jackson's 1989 protest-pop landmark as scaffolding, then hangs new commissions on it: Jlin, the footwork producer whose "Baobab" translates her drum-machine logic to bow and string, alongside pieces by Jeff Scott, Mazz Swift, and Eddie Venegas. Between movements, electronic "Rhythm Nation Remix" interludes by Jannina and John-Paul Norpoth stitch the program together, so the album plays as one continuous argument rather than a recital. The deeper roots come from the Kronos Quartet's Fifty for the Future library: Henry Threadgill's "Sixfivetwo" and Fodé Lassana Diabaté's "Sunjata's Time," which opens the record in Jacob Garchik's arrangement, balafon patterns redistributed across four instruments. Fifty-three minutes on Avie, and the rare crossover record where the pop source is treated as repertoire, not decoration. One night at Le Botanique in Brussels, April 2025: forty-two minutes of improvisation, cut into eleven tracks numbered XI through XXI. The Éons Quartet is billed as a resurrection of the band's original lineup, with an asterisk: founding drummer Pierre Arèse no longer plays, so percussionist Dirk Wachtelaer sits in, and the record's engine is his duel with Sébastien Schmit, two kits arguing across the stage while Jean Jacques Duerinckx's saxophone and Guillaume Cazalet's amplified guitar pile on. The Sanskrit title translates roughly as "among the gods, at the sight of the one who has become a serpent, they are afraid." Two years of silence after play with earth! 0.03, and the Seoul trio returns with eleven songs and a title pinched from the "Bed Peace" sign above John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 Bed-In. Daniel Kim says the new instruments they experimented with brought the band "closer to the essence" of what they are, which is a gentle way of saying the edges have been sanded differently this time. A world tour follows. Their easeful surf-adjacent melancholy made them one of Korea's biggest indie exports; whether this one gambles or consolidates, I'll know after a few more evenings with it. 首爾三人組睽違兩年的第二張正式專輯。專輯名玩的是列儂與小野洋子 1969 年 Bed-In 床頭那塊「Bed Peace」紙牌，歪一個母音變成「壞掉的碎片」，從和平標語滑向自我盤點。主唱 Daniel Kim 說這次用新樂器做的實驗比以往更接近樂團的本質。11 首，之後接世界巡演，亞洲場次應該不遠。

The Brazilian band's third album comes with a production method as a position paper: recorded and mixed entirely to magnetic tape over nine mostly-live days, no computers at any stage, mastered fully analogue at Emil Berliner Studios in Berlin, all stated plainly as a refusal of AI tools in art. Producer Richard Behrens (Elder, Kadavar) supplied the vintage gear. What's on the tape is stranger than the manifesto: zeuhl and King Crimson vocabulary grafted onto forró and ciranda rhythms from their native Paraíba, with two singers splitting the labor on "Colosso," one guttural, one melodic, like a monster and its interpreter. Somewhere in the mix, reportedly, a rubber chicken. Three tracks from years of mutual admiration between Bogotá and Miami: Ela Minus's hardware melancholy meeting Nick León's humid club pressure. On the title track she sings "Who am I if I stop working?" over synths that move like something underground and unhurried. Patrick Holland mixed, Heba Kadry mastered; the November 12-inch adds remixes from Loidis, Guedra Guedra, and Brenda. The Tasmanian-born pianist builds an album as a séance across two centuries. Schumann's Geistervariationen, the theme he believed angels dictated to him days before his asylum committal, is answered by Michael Finnissy's 25-minute "R.S. Geistervariationen," which ends with a movement titled "Chorus of ghostly voices from afar." The title work is the real event: a rare joint composition by Finnissy and Cassandra Miller, worked from the African-American spiritual "Sinner, Don't Let This Harvest Pass." Miller's solo "Philip the Wanderer" rounds out 69 minutes on Métier. Program-note music that plays like a ghost story told slowly. 舒曼進療養院前幾天寫下《幽靈變奏曲》，自稱主題由天使口述。塔斯馬尼亞出身的鋼琴家 Havlat 把它放在專輯開頭，接 Michael Finnissy 的 25 分鐘回應之作，終段標題叫「遠方幽靈的合唱」。標題作更罕見：Finnissy 與 Cassandra Miller 聯名合寫，底本是非裔靈歌。69 分鐘的獨奏專輯，結構像一場隔了 170 年的通信。彈性速度都留給幽靈。

Catch-up, from July 24. At the 2024 We Out Here festival, Moor Mother stepped to the Leeds ensemble's stage and said: "It's always about love / It's always about liberation." Bandleader Ozzy Moysey split the sentences into twin albums; last time was Love, this is the darker half. Harps, strings, and massed horns in the Gondwana house tradition of Manchester spiritualism, though the mood here runs to storm-cloud modal vamps. Bandcamp Daily's jazz column says it outdoes its twin. "Sweet Escape" was finished during the last week she spent with her grandmother. The Quietus review this week called the depths under the surface hidden; I'd call them barely covered.
