The Rose of Jericho is a desert plant that spends most of its life as a dead-looking ball of twigs; add water and it unclenches, green again, within hours. Taja Cheek picked it as a governing image for fata morgana, the record she says closes the arc that began with her self-titled debut in 2017, and Mexican Summer pressed a limited vinyl edition that glows in the dark to match. The sequencing, handled by Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda, front-loads the most abstract material, which means the first stretch asks for patience the back half repays. The payoff is "soulless cycle," track eight, where the haze parts for a blast of distortion that Stereogum's album-of-the-week review ranked among the most forceful recordings of recent years; to me it sounds like a No Age record trying to escape an aquarium. Screechy Dan, a Kingston veteran, drops a dancehall verse into "july 5th." Brooklyn, deep-sea bioluminescence, a plant that refuses to die—the mood board alone earns the Pick. Six years is a long silence for someone whose last album became shorthand for a generation's interior weather. Lost Weekend arrives as a sixteen-track double LP on Dead Oceans, trailed by stunts that double as thesis statements: a Madison Square Garden show with one-dollar tickets, a spring tour with phones banned at the door, three hundred plus midnight listening parties last night. The subject matter is what the tabloid years left behind: a public relationship, grief, the dissociation of being perceived at scale. Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker appear, as do Alex G and Jack Antonoff, which maps the record's two poles of boygenius warmth and studio gloss. James Ellis Ford produces other people's best records: Arctic Monkeys, Fontaines D.C., Gorillaz, Geese, a fair share of the past two decades of British guitar music. In late 2024 he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and his wife moved a desk, a laptop and some cheap gear into the hospital room. Lost In Another World was written in a little over two weeks beside the chemo drip, then finished at home for Domino. You brace for a heavy record; the actual thing is twelve tracks of light-footed, homemade art pop, closer to Broadcast than to memoir, with the single "Overtones" out front. The Quietus made it album of the week and read the speed as a virtue: no time to second-guess, so the first ideas stayed. The lyric sheet of Sweeping Promises' Sub Pop debut reads like a syllabus of literary paranoia. "Last Man" borrows from Mary Shelley's 1826 apocalypse novel; "My Anchoress" studies Julian of Norwich, the fifteenth-century recluse who wrote the first English book attributable to a woman. The sound behind it took eighteen months in the Kansas building where the duo lives, rehearses and records, using a homemade method they call chamber recording: no stacked overdubs, just the room's own reflections piled into a wall, finished by touring drummer Spenser Gralla playing the songs live-style. Open Mike Eagle and Kenny Segal met in the orbit of LA's Project Blowed scene almost twenty years ago and somehow never made a full record together until now. The subtitle does the synopsis for me: Rap Songs About A Relationship That Ends In Every Possible Universe. Fifteen tracks replay one five-year relationship as absurdist black comedy: an argument over the color of a rental car, a prayer for the strength not to check an ex's socials, an attempt to carve two sets of initials into wet concrete that ends when the stick snaps. billy woods drops by, and Hemlock Ernst—the rap alias of Future Islands' Samuel T. Herring—turns up on "Unfinished Concrete Initials." Adrienne Rich's "dream of a common language" frames the second duo album from Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) and Gregory Uhlmann (SML), named for a geothermal creek in California's Mono County. The instrumentation stops at two guitars. "To Be a Good Friend" opens and closes with footsteps and muffled voices, as if the take began before anyone agreed it had; "Finding Methuselah" bounces a phrase between a four-thousand-year-old bristlecone pine and the Milky Way, generous territory for nylon strings; "Nylon Waiting Room" lasts fifty-one seconds. The clear vinyl is limited to three hundred copies in a color Orindal calls creek water. The voice carrying Hina Oikawa's Japanese tanka belongs to Mỹ Tâm Huynh, a Vietnamese-American singer working outside her native language, one more translation folded into a record already about crossing between forms. Oikawa, an alto saxophonist living in New York, built her debut album on the tanka's arithmetic of thirty-one syllables in a 5-7-5-7-7 pattern: "Introduction" converts the counts into beat cycles, and the closer, "Thirty-One Syllables," treats the form itself as a melody's skeleton. Ryan Keberle supervised the music; Oikawa's husband, trumpeter Naoya Ogura, co-produced—he once proposed by setting her tanka cycle "Yuba no Kuni" to music, and that piece sits at track four. The large ensemble includes Sam Dillon and Summer Camargo. Cipriani Potter met Beethoven in Vienna in 1817, and Beethoven wrote to a friend that the young Englishman had talent. Thirty-eight years later Wagner, guest-conducting in London, led Potter's G minor Symphony and found its composer old-fashioned but likable. That symphony anchors the fourth and final volume of CPO's complete cycle with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Howard Griffiths, alongside a D major symphony and a rare double concerto for violin and piano, with Julian Trevelyan, the youngest laureate in the history of the Long-Thibaud competition, at the keyboard.
