Sarah Davachi — The Will of Tongues

Four bodies of work are stacked here rather than blended: five solo pieces for historical pipe organs recorded across the United States, Canada and the Netherlands; a suite of three choral settings commissioned by the Louth Contemporary Music Society in Dundalk; a set of interludes for microtonal ensembles of strings, brass and woodwinds; and a long chamber piece for string trio, organ and tape. The interludes are the tell. They appear as I, then V, then II, at tracks one, four and ten, which means the numbering is a sequence Davachi has deliberately dealt out of order, so that the record keeps returning to a room you have already been in. The two halves of “The Rose Dialogues” run twenty-three minutes each and sit at the centre of the thing like a hinge. On “The Second Tuning,” thirteen minutes fifty, the organ moves so slowly that the beating between pipes becomes the event. Two hours is a lot to ask of anyone. A piano trio assembled out of three countries: Draksler from Slovenia at the piano, Eldh from Sweden on bass, Lillinger from Germany at the kit. The album title is a warning about method. Eleven tracks and not one of them makes it past six minutes; “Jogol” is over in one minute forty-one. What would be a solo in another trio’s hands gets cut to a gesture and moved on from. The ninth track carries a Swedish title, “När Världens Hopp Förtvinat Stod,” and slows to five minutes twenty, which by the standards of this record counts as sprawl. 鋼琴三重奏，三個人來自三個國家：Draksler 斯洛文尼亞（鋼琴）、Eldh 瑞典（低音提琴）、Lillinger 德國（鼓）。

Eleven of the twelve songs are under three and a half minutes, which is what the form asks for. Track ten lasts one minute three seconds and is called “Thank You Mother Squirrel.” Then the record ends on five minutes six, a minute and a half longer than anything preceding it. I have not decided whether that is a closing statement or a man who ran out of edits. 十二首裡十一首不到三分半，這是 power pop 本來的規格。第十首一分零三秒，名字叫〈Thank You Mother Squirrel〉。

Dan Friel, once of Parts & Labor, has been naming Upper Wilds records after planets for years now, and this is the one about dying: the label copy lists a brush with skin cancer, the climate, funerals. The counterintuitive part is the tempo. It is the fastest record the trio has made. All ten tracks fall between three nineteen and four forty-one, which gives the whole thing the shape of a band that has decided there is no time left to stretch anything out. “Green-Wood Cemetery” is three thirty-three and named after the one in Brooklyn. Dan Friel（前 Parts & Labor 共同創辦人）用行星替 Upper Wilds 的專輯命名已經好幾張：Mars、Venus、Jupiter，現在輪到 Mercury。

The first of three volumes, thirty-two tracks, mostly first recordings, running from Op. 5 to Op. 113. “6 Moods” gives each of its pieces a name — Contentment, Assertion, Whims, Energy, Reflection, Aggression — and Aggression is fifty-seven seconds long. Hedges knew Philip Larkin in Hull and set his words in a cantata. On the same disc as the piano sonata sits a set of concert pieces written for children, which tells you how this composer thought about the instrument. 三卷全集的第一卷，三十二軌，多數是世界首錄，作品編號從 Op. 5 一路排到 Op. 113。

The programme is the argument. A Chopin nocturne, the Moonlight entire, then Debussy’s “Rêverie” and the Bach-Siloti prelude, and only then the Waldstein. Between the two Beethoven sonatas Liu has parked Mompou’s two treatments of “Au clair de la lune,” a Schoenberg miniature that lasts eighty-three seconds, and Ligeti’s “Fanfares.” A recital disc from a Chopin Competition winner is usually a display cabinet; this one is closer to a night’s listening arranged by someone who does not much care whether you can see the joins. It closes on “Dream,” eight minutes thirty-four, the longest track and the only one that is not repertoire. 這張的論點寫在曲序裡。蕭邦夜曲開場，接《月光》三個樂章，然後德布西〈夢〉、巴赫-西洛蒂前奏曲，最後才進《華爾斯坦》。
