Sam Shepherd wrote Mere Mortals for the San Francisco Ballet, which premiered Aszure Barton's staging in January 2024; the recording, made with the company's own orchestra, only now arrives as a record, his second long orchestral work after Promises. The Pandora myth supplies the architecture: fourteen numbered movements, with titles that run from “Pandora's Theme” through “Opening of the Jar” to a closer called “Nowhere to Land,” which is as candid as a track list gets about where the story leaves you. The materials are the ones he has been circling for a decade, strings and brass laid against pulsed electronics, except here they answer to choreography rather than to a dance floor, and the pacing shows it. Shepherd spent release day in Edinburgh playing the synthesizer parts himself, beside the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, for the score's European premiere at the festival. Sullivan Fortner — Leave That In There

Fortner has been recording with Tyrone Allen II and Kayvon Gordon for years, but this is the first time the working trio gets a whole album to itself, which for a pianist of his generation counts as a statement of settledness. It follows the Grammy that Southern Nights collected in 2025, and it declines to be a sequel: Derrick Hodge produces, and the trio's floor keeps opening onto Hammond B3, synthesizer, marimba and Bàtá drums, the New Orleans inheritance handled as working material rather than heritage. Thirteen tracks, twelve of them originals. Recorded at Andrew Wyatt's studio, the band's first sessions in New York State in a decade, with Dave Fridmann mixing; the Miike Snow singer turns out to be a sympathetic handler of a band whose gloom has always been more tailored than advertised. Twelve songs in fifty-three minutes, trailed by a double A-side and by “Iron City” in July. The reviews have settled around a Metacritic 82, rare air for album eight from anyone. Jordi Savall — Schumann: Das Paradies und die Peri

Schumann thought this 1843 secular oratorio was among the best things he ever wrote; the recording catalogue has never quite agreed, which makes Savall's decision to bring Le Concert des Nations to it feel less like luxury casting and less predictable than another Beethoven cycle. The story, out of Thomas Moore's Lalla Rookh, follows a Peri barred from paradise until she delivers an acceptable gift: a hero's dying blood is refused, a lover's last sigh is refused, and only a sinner's repentant tear gets her through the gate. Gramophone made it Editor's Choice for September; BBC Music Magazine gave it five stars. Lina Johnson sings the Peri, and the period winds give Schumann's orchestration a grain that modern bands tend to polish off. Rameau earned his living for years as a jobbing violinist and left the instrument almost nothing to play, a professional irony this album sets out to repair. Langlois de Swarte and William Christie, who is 82 and still at the harpsichord, assemble an imagined recital out of opera excerpts recast for violin and keyboard, padded with actual violin music by the contemporaries Rameau declined to join: Aubert, Cupis, Bourdet, Tarade. Thirty-two tracks in seventy-four minutes, most of them small, which suits the conceit; a recital is a string of exits and entrances, and these two treat each number as a scene. Their Leclair record won prizes. Ten songs in twenty-eight minutes, five years after Leftovers, and the economy reads as confidence. Lauren Spear's second album keeps the Montreal company close: Fez Gielen and Jonas Bonnetta produce, Eliza Niemi plays cello, Georgia Harmer sings harmony, and the fuller folk-rock passages have the loose communal warmth of a band that eats together. The title track is the coordinate to check first, a piano ballad that pushes her conversational alto up into a quavering falsetto and leaves it there, slightly exposed, for the length of the chorus. 蒙特婁唱作人 Lauren Spear 五年來的第二張，十首歌總共二十八分鐘。製作、大提琴、和聲全是蒙特婁獨立圈的朋友，folk-rock 段落有一種一起吃過很多頓飯的鬆。標題曲是鋼琴 ballad，她把說話式的唱腔往上逼到發顫的假聲，就懸在那裡不下來。黑膠是蘋果綠的。

A first full-length from a Kyoto-formed, Tokyo-based band, built as a calendar: twelve songs, one per month, from “Waiting in January” to a December track that translates as “I dream.” The months are not weighted equally, and the weighting is the record's real editorial voice. February, titled as a fight, runs six minutes fifty-seven, the longest thing here; August, titled as hiding, is gone in two thirty-five. The band moves between hush and blowout in the way of groups raised on both slowcore and shoegaze, but the through-line is the structure itself, a year treated as something that circles rather than advances. The English title is Ever Turning. I want a few more listens before deciding whether the concept carries the whole hour. 補記，8/26 發行。京都結成、現居東京的樂隊，首張全長把一年寫成十二首歌：一月在等待，二月是戰鬥，八月躲起來，十二月做夢。份量給得很偏心，〈2月はたたかい〉六分五十七秒全碟最長，〈8月はかくれる〉兩分三十五秒就結束。靜寂與轟音來回切換，slowcore 的骨架配 shoegaze 的皮膚。英文題叫 Ever Turning。九月中開始全國巡演，首站宇都宮。

Album ten, four years after Ninja of Four, from a Tokyo band that has run its own label for most of its life. The title means “Hikawadai diary,” after the Nerima neighborhood where they are based, and the opener is called “Intro (Hikawadai Line),” named for the train. Ten songs about the ordinary days a band has between records. Out on asian gothic label, catalogue number ASG-065. 補記，8/26 發行。第十張全長，隔了四年。專輯名直譯「冰川臺日記」，冰川臺是他們住的練馬區地名，開場曲就叫〈Intro（Hikawadai Line）〉，以那條通勤電車線命名。二十多年的樂隊，第十張不寫遠方，寫自家門口的日常，美和無常都在走路可到的範圍內。發售前兩首先行曲靜悄悄上架，連宣傳稿都省了。10/3 開始專輯巡演。
