Alabama Shakes — I Must Be Dreaming

Eleven years after Sound & Color, the Shakes return as a trio, with touring drummer Noah Bond in Steve Johnson's seat and Shawn Everett, who engineered that last record, now producing this one. What Brittany Howard brought back from the hiatus is a stranger cargo than anyone ordered: NME heard a paean to domestic bliss lying beside a lament for Trump's America, and both readings hold up. “Easy” is a plainly happy song for her fiancée, sung by a voice that used to sound like it was fighting the tape; “American Dream” is the protest number, and the critics' complaint, fairly enough, is that it goes down too smoothly for its subject. Mojo hears the band picking up where 2015 left off and pushing further out. I keep going back and forth on whether contentment suits her voice, and I suspect that question is the record's actual subject. Album six since the reunion, recorded in short bursts over a year at J Mascis's Bisquiteen studio in Amherst, self-produced, nearly all core trio; the one guest is a local named Ken Mauri, whose piano and organ keep surfacing in the corners. Byron Coley's liner notes make the record sound like a neighborhood errand, which fits a band this deep into its second life. Lou Barlow gets two songs and spends both of them angry at the state of the country, “Blowin' Up” and “No One's Ready,” the latter asking what the war is for. The opener “Several Got Away” carries one of J's meanest riffs in years, and “Put It Down” builds like a ballad before the distortion takes it. Uncut scored it 90 and reached for Farm as the comparison. Marta Cikojevic plays keys in TOPS; her second solo record raids two dressing-up boxes at once, the Y2K messy-pop of Uffie and Kesha and the 80s power ballads of Whitesnake and Def Leppard, all of it rendered on vintage synths with TOPS bandmate David Carriere co-writing and Mike Silver of CFCF joining for “Chaotic Princess.” “Stars Are Fake” opens the record on a funk-inflected synthwave strut; “99 Dimensional” goes full Janet. Arbutus pitches the whole thing as party girl anthems for when the party is over, which undersells how carefully the mess is arranged. 專輯名裡的 Mask Lady 是真人。TOPS 鍵盤手 Marta Cikojevic 從蒙特婁搬到好萊塢之後，每晚樓下都站著同一位衣著講究、戴全罩面具的女人，鄰裡都喊她 Mask Lady。她把這位懸而未決的鄰居寫進了第二張個人專輯。聲音的參照系抓兩頭：Uffie、Kesha 那代 Y2K 流行，和 Whitesnake、Def Leppard 式的八〇年代 power ballad，全程 vintage 合成器。〈Stars Are Fake〉開場是放克底的 synthwave，〈99 Dimensional〉直接開進 Janet Jackson 的舞池。面具下是誰，唱片沒有回答。

LA Priest — Into the Sky

Sam Eastgate's fourth LA Priest record began in lockdown as a private dance project and comes out the other end as his version of house music, co-written, co-produced and mixed by his old friend Alex Ridha, better known as Boys Noize. The instruments are the story only Eastgate could supply, since he built them: the Polygene synth and the Gene 616 drum machine, machines with nobody else's presets. musicOMH places the result between Blood Orange's soft soul and the night-time house of early Disclosure, and calls it some of the most satisfying music of his career. Ten tracks, love and liberation, pulsing throughout. Sam Eastgate 的樂器沒有第二套：Polygene 合成器和 Gene 616 鼓機都是他自己焊出來的，音色無預設可抄。這張的起點是封鎖期想做的一張舞曲唱片，他索性自創了一套 house 的做法，再找老友 Alex Ridha（Boys Noize）共同寫作、製作、混音收尾。十首歌，musicOMH 形容介於 Blood Orange 的軟性靈魂與早期 Disclosure 的夜間 house 之間，並稱這是他生涯最令人滿足的一批歌。孤品設備，做出來的反而是他最好進耳朵的東西。

Three tracks left over from last year's Inland See sessions, which in this band's economy means a sixteen-minute piece called “Ajami” that most groups would have led the album with. Everything was cut to two-inch tape and mixed down to half-inch, kalimba samples and field recordings drifting through the krautrock pulse. The EP surfaced earlier this year as a two-track Qobuz exclusive; the wide release adds “Watch Your Step,” five and a half minutes that exist only on vinyl and cassette. Mahler Academy Orchestra & Philipp von Steinaecker — Mahler: Symphony No. 5 on Period Instruments

The Bolzano academy that Claudio Abbado founded follows its period-instrument Mahler Nine with the Fifth, on instruments replicating the Vienna Philharmonic's setup around 1900, roughly forty-five academy players joined by fifty-five veterans of Europe's major orchestras. The edition is new too, Breitkopf's Urtext with Mahler's own accumulated corrections. The selling point hides in the fourth movement: the Adagietto, written for Alma in the season Mahler met her, here played on the instruments of exactly that Vienna, gut strings and all. Marina Mahler, the composer's granddaughter, watches over the project. Eusebius Mandyczewski spent his life as the archive-keeper of Vienna's Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde and as Brahms's closest friend, editing the older man's complete works while his own songs went unrecorded for a century. Krimmel, a baritone with Romanian roots of his own, alternates Mandyczewski's groups with Brahms's on this disc and sings the Romanian-language songs in the original, which the critic Peter Sommeregger believes has never happened on record before. Bushakevitz partners him on a Steinway. One reviewer's warning doubles as the best description: seventy-four minutes of unrelieved melancholy, best taken in small doses. Some friendships are archives; this one finally gets read aloud. A second album from a 23-year-old Taipei songwriter who came up through a rap talent show, and its lead single “To-Do List” is the oddest love-song construction of the week: a duet with rapper 呂允 that sounds like courtship and is addressed, on inspection, entirely to herself. She hummed the whole demo using the digits 12345678 in place of words; he liked the joke enough to keep the numbers in the finished lyric. Ten songs about pulling back from other people's expectations. 主打〈To-Do List〉的 demo，她整首隻用 12345678 哼完。找呂允填詞，他第一反應是「這什麼東西」，聽了幾遍卻捨不得改，索性把數字哼唱留進成品。成品聽起來是甜蜜的男女對唱，細看歌詞，整首唱給自己——她說的「愛自己」，是在每個決定前先問一句：這真的是我想做的嗎。23 歲，第二張專輯，十首歌記錄從被惡意留言擊中到把重心收回自己身上的過程。臺北創作場景這條線，本月值得記一筆。
