Henry Threadgill Zooid — Cut You Where You Was

Pi Recordings opened in 2001 with a Threadgill album, and twenty-five years later it marks the anniversary with another one — the original Zooid, back for the first time since Poof in 2021, with Liberty Ellman on acoustic guitar, Jose Davila on tuba and trombone, Christopher Hoffman on cello, Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums. The proportions are the strange part. Ten tracks; six of them run under two minutes and sixteen seconds, and sitting in the middle is "Red Admiral Red Moon Rising" at twelve minutes twenty-one. "Bingo" arrives in three separately numbered parts rather than as a suite, so you get the sensation of a piece being interrupted and resumed by the track listing itself. Threadgill has spent decades building an intervallic system elaborate enough to require its own vocabulary, and here he keeps cutting the results down to epigrams. "Blur" is one minute forty-five and does not feel abbreviated. It feels finished. The title song is a Minnie Riperton cover, or more precisely a Charles Stepney composition from Come To My Garden, rebuilt around Makaya McCraven's drums and Junius Paul's bass so that what was once a garden becomes something closer to a room with weather in it. Hoyes is a New York singer with a conservatory background and this is her first full album, thirteen tracks, opening on "Zora's Moon" and closing thirty seconds later than you expect on an outro that hands the last word to a recording of Zora Neale Hurston's actual voice. In between, Langston Hughes supplies the lyric to "Tired (Waiting for the World)," Casey Benjamin's vocoder haunts "Making Love," and Legacy Russell writes the liner notes. The vinyl is limited to a hundred copies with a sixteen-page book, which tells you who the record thinks it is for. 開場曲叫〈Zora's Moon〉，收尾曲〈Expecting Outro (Gratitude)〉只有三十秒，裡面放的是 Zora Neale Hurston 本人的錄音。一張唱片的頭和尾扣在同一個已故作家身上。

No chord instrument: alto saxophone, trumpet, double bass, drums, the Ornette lineage stated without apology. Six pieces, all recorded across ten days of European touring in April 2023, mastered in Winterthur in May of this year. "In Circles - Yellow Crane" runs sixteen and a half minutes and takes up a third of the album; the closing title track is five. Gerry Hemingway keeps the pulse conversational rather than propulsive. 錄音收在 2023 年四月那趟歐洲巡演的十天裡，母帶拖到今年五月才在瑞士溫特圖爾的 Hardstudios 做完。三年。這種時間差在現場錄音裡不算罕見，但把六首全部收進同一趟巡演，是另一回事。

The B minor Sonata is here as a prologue, twenty-eight minutes of it, and then the record spends the rest of its length among the late fragments Liszt wrote when nobody much wanted them: "Nuages gris," "Unstern! – Sinistre," the "Csárdás macabre," the Bagatelle that gives up on tonality in its own title. There is a small elegy for Wagner, dead a year, called "R.W. – Venezia." Avdeeva wrote the booklet essay herself and argues that this material opened the door to the twentieth century, which is the standard claim; what is less standard is putting the Sonata first and letting everything after it sound like erosion. She ends on the St. François de Paule legend, walking on the waves. All six surviving motets, taken from a run of concerts in the Tauber Philharmonie at Weikersheim, a town of about seven thousand. "Jesu, meine Freude" is broken into eleven tracks here, one of which lasts fifty-three seconds, and the granularity turns out to suit it. "Fürchte dich nicht" is the single longest span at nine minutes; the eight-part double-choir writing of "Singet dem Herrn" opens the disc at speed. 巴赫現存的六首經文歌全在這裡，被切成二十一軌。〈Jesu, meine Freude〉一首就佔十一軌，其中第四段〈Denn das Gesetz〉只有五十三秒。合唱錄音切這麼細其實少見，但這批曲子本來就是段落分明的體裁，拆開反而聽得出結構。

Six years after forming in Kansai, a first full album, and it opens with a thirty-seven-second title track before anything else happens. Fourteen songs, three under a minute, the guitars jangling in direct descent from Flipper's Guitar. The limited edition is bound as a book. I have not decided whether the lightness is the point or the limit. 限定盤做成一本書，CD 夾在裡面。2021 年在關西組團，六年才出第一張全長，十四首。

Will Greenham co-founded The Cornish Bank, the non-profit venue in Falmouth where this scene actually happens, and the record sounds like a room he knows the acoustics of. Eight tracks on Geneva's Bongo Joe, a label whose catalogue has never respected borders: the third is called "Colour Pillow / Kologo," after the two-string lute from northern Ghana, and the longest, "Frik and Frak," spends six minutes welding Saharan blues to kosmische drift. His son Henry plays the synthesizers. It would be easy to file this as another British band borrowing instruments from elsewhere, except the borrowing is credited in the song titles, which is more than most manage. 第三首曲子叫〈Colour Pillow / Kologo〉。kologo 是迦納北部的雙弦魯特琴，出現在一支康瓦爾樂團的曲名裡。

Mama's Broke — Reunion

Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria call the album Reunion and then close it with a song called "No Great Reunion," which is either a joke or a warning and works fine as both. Twelve tracks, most of them short, the arrangements pared back until the two voices are carrying nearly everything and the fiddle enters like a third opinion. "Fifolet Waltz" borrows a Cajun will-o'-the-wisp that leads travellers into the swamp; "Dig Deep and Win Wisely" is done in under two minutes.
